Canada Visitor Visa 2027: Fees, Documents, Biometrics & Application Guide

Fact-checked 7 September 2026. Current fees and process references come from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Confirm them again in your IRCC account before submission.

A Canadian visitor visa application is not approved because the applicant has a hotel reservation or an invitation alone. The decision-maker considers whether the proposed visit is genuine, the applicant can support it, the information is reliable and the applicant is likely to leave Canada at the end of the authorised stay. The practical task is to make those facts understandable without exaggeration.

This guide is for people preparing a temporary resident visa, often called a visitor visa, for 2027 tourism or family visits. Some travellers need an electronic travel authorisation instead, while United States citizens have different entry-document rules. Start with IRCC’s official questionnaire for the passport you will use.

Visitor visa, eTA or another route?

The required document depends on nationality, travel method and status. A visa-required traveller normally needs a visitor visa before travelling. A visa-exempt traveller arriving by air may need an eTA, subject to exemptions. Neither document is suitable if the true plan is unauthorised work, long-term study or permanent residence.

State the immediate purpose honestly. Having a future interest in studying or immigrating does not automatically make a temporary visit impossible, but you must satisfy the temporary conditions and avoid presenting a tourist story that conflicts with your records or intended activity.

Current government fees

IRCC currently lists a visitor visa fee of CAN$100 per person. Where biometrics are required, the current individual biometrics fee is CAN$85, with family maximums in defined circumstances. Other costs—passport transmission, a medical examination, police record, translation or application-centre services—may arise depending on the case and location.

Pay only through the official IRCC process or an authorised channel identified by IRCC. A person asking for a private transfer to “unlock” approval is not collecting a legitimate visa guarantee. Government fees do not purchase a positive result.

Processing time is not a fixed promise

IRCC publishes an online processing-time tool, and the estimate varies by application type and country. It can change as inventories and operating conditions change. The clock also does not include every practical stage in the same way: preparing records, getting an appointment, giving biometrics and sending a passport after a request can add time.

Check the tool when planning, apply well before an important event and avoid a non-refundable commitment based on a past estimate. Sending duplicate applications or repeated webforms without a case-specific reason does not create a faster queue.

What the officer is trying to understand

A complete file should answer: Why Canada? Why these dates? Who pays? Where will the applicant stay? What is the applicant’s economic and personal situation? What makes the stay temporary? The documents are evidence for that account, not independent decorations.

For example, an applicant attending a sibling’s graduation might provide the graduation or invitation information, proof of the relationship, leave from work, a realistic trip budget and evidence of accommodation. Those items reinforce one another. Adding an unrelated property photograph may contribute little if the application never explains the trip cost or source of funds.

Purpose of travel

Tourists can give a concise day or city plan, accommodation and activities appropriate to the season. Family visitors should explain the relationship, occasion, visit length and arrangements. Business visitors need to confirm that their activities fit the business-visitor rules and may use employer and Canadian host correspondence.

A plan should be specific without pretending that every lunch is fixed. Explain the main places, travel logic and costs. A two-week cross-country itinerary from Vancouver to Toronto, Montréal and remote northern destinations requires more time and money than a single-city family visit; the budget should recognise that difference.

Invitation letters: useful but not decisive

An invitation can identify the host, relationship, purpose, dates, address, household and financial support. The host may provide evidence of Canadian status and address. IRCC’s own guidance makes clear that writing an invitation does not make the host legally responsible for the visitor in every sense and does not guarantee a visa.

The applicant remains the applicant. Even where the host pays for housing and meals, show the visitor’s circumstances, available personal funds and return plan. If the host will pay everything, explain why and document affordability rather than using one vague sentence.

Employment, education, business and family context

Evidence of ongoing responsibilities can include an employer letter and approved leave, current enrolment and academic dates, business trading records, dependants or other concrete commitments. Quality matters more than labels. A business registration shows existence; recent invoices, account activity and operational evidence show that the business is active.

Do not invent a tie. Applications can be refused for insufficient evidence, but a false employment letter or altered bank statement can create a much more serious misrepresentation problem. If your circumstances are unconventional—freelance work, a career break or informal family support—explain them and use the best genuine records available.

Financial evidence

IRCC does not advertise one universal bank-balance number for every visitor. The necessary resources depend on duration, accommodation, transport, dependants and the payer. Create a basic budget in Canadian dollars: international transport, local travel, accommodation, food, insurance, activities and reserve. Then show how the available money covers it without undermining ordinary obligations at home.

Bank statements should show account ownership and transaction history. Match salary deposits to payslips or employer evidence. Explain a large recent credit with documents showing its source. A high closing balance created by an unexplained transfer can prompt questions instead of solving them.

When sponsored, include the sponsor’s income and bank records, the relationship, a signed explanation and the expenses covered. Avoid counting the same money twice—for example, presenting the applicant and sponsor as each independently funding the entire trip from one shared balance.

Travel history and previous refusals

Provide requested history accurately. Prior compliant travel may help demonstrate how you have used visas, but a person without extensive travel is not automatically ineligible. Focus on the present application rather than purchasing unnecessary trips merely to collect stamps.

Disclose refusals or immigration issues when the form asks. Read old decision letters and explain material changes. Submitting the identical evidence while hoping for another conclusion is rarely a plan. If a previous finding mentions misrepresentation, inadmissibility or a ban, professional Canadian immigration-law advice may be appropriate.

Create an organised digital file

Online systems impose file types and size limits. Combine related pages into readable PDFs, use descriptive filenames and ensure no scan is upside down or cut off. A suggested order is identity; purpose and itinerary; employment or study; finances; host and relationship; travel history; and a short letter of explanation where needed.

The explanation letter should resolve issues rather than repeat the form. Use headings, dates and references to uploaded evidence. If the application asks for a document you genuinely cannot provide, state why and offer the closest reliable alternative; do not upload a blank page or a fabricated substitute.

Biometrics

Many applicants must give fingerprints and a photograph after receiving instructions. Follow the biometrics instruction letter, book with the authorised collection point and meet the deadline. Previous Canadian biometrics may remain valid for a period in some temporary-residence cases; use IRCC’s status checker rather than assuming.

Biometrics confirm identity and support screening; giving them does not indicate approval. Keep the appointment confirmation and monitor the IRCC account for messages. If a genuine obstacle prevents compliance, contact IRCC through the instructed route before the deadline where possible.

Medical examinations and additional requests

A visitor may need an immigration medical examination depending on intended length, recent residence in designated countries or planned activities such as certain health-related work. Use an IRCC panel physician when required; an ordinary clinic’s certificate is not a substitute.

IRCC may request more information, an interview or the passport. Read each letter closely because the deadline and submission channel matter. A passport request is an important step, but the final issued document must still be checked before travel.

After a decision

If approved, follow instructions for passport submission where applicable. When the passport returns, verify the name, passport number, entries and validity dates. The visa’s expiry date is the last date by which it can generally be used to seek entry; it is not automatically the date until which a visitor may remain.

At the port of entry, a Canada Border Services Agency officer decides admission and the authorised stay. Many visitors may be allowed up to six months, but an officer can set a different date or issue a visitor record. Answer questions consistently and keep accommodation, funds, return plan and host contact available.

If refused

Read the refusal letter and any accessible officer notes with care. Identify which conclusion the evidence failed to support: purpose, finances, temporary intention, family ties, employment, immigration status or reliability. A new application should respond to the actual concern with changed facts, clearer explanation or better evidence.

There is generally no routine administrative appeal for an ordinary temporary resident visa refusal, although legal review may be possible in appropriate cases. That is different from simply disagreeing with the outcome. A licensed Canadian immigration professional can assess complex files; verify the representative’s authorisation.

2027 readiness checklist

  • Correct entry document confirmed for the passport and travel method.
  • Purpose, dates, destination and payer agree across the form.
  • Budget matches the available and traceable funds.
  • Home circumstances are documented truthfully.
  • Invitation and host evidence answer practical questions.
  • Scans are complete and translations meet IRCC instructions.
  • Biometrics and additional-request deadlines are tracked.
  • Bookings are financially sensible before a decision.

Official sources

General information only: IRCC and Canadian border authorities make all decisions. No adviser or travel company can guarantee approval or entry.

A worked family-visit example

Consider an applicant invited for a daughter’s graduation. The central evidence is not a large tourism schedule. It is the event, relationship, proposed dates, accommodation, trip funding and the applicant’s own reason to return. The daughter can provide the ceremony information, invitation, Canadian status and address. The applicant can provide family records, employment or business evidence, finances and a leave period that matches the visit.

If the daughter pays only for accommodation, say exactly that. The applicant’s budget should show airfare and personal spending. Clear division is more credible than two letters each claiming to pay every cost.

Self-employed applicants

A self-employed person may not have payslips or a conventional leave letter. Build the file from ordinary business evidence: registration, tax material where applicable, contracts, recent invoices, business bank activity, staff or operational records and commitments after the trip. Explain the role and who covers essential work during absence.

A newly registered entity with no trading history cannot automatically prove stable activity. Use the real history available and keep the visit proportionate. Do not create invoices or backdate contracts. If income is irregular, show the pattern and explain it rather than presenting one month as typical.

Students and young adults

A student can use enrolment, academic calendar, fee records and the date study resumes. If parents fund the trip, document relationship, consent where relevant, funding scope and their resources. The application should explain why the trip fits the academic schedule.

A young adult’s limited personal assets are not surprising, but the overall account must still make sense. Avoid claiming independent funding in one answer and complete parental dependence in another. Describe the real arrangement.

Digital account security

Create the IRCC account through the official Canada.ca path, use a unique password and protect access. Beware of representatives who will not give you a copy of the submitted form or who control the only login. You should know what was declared in your name.

Download confirmations and messages. Verify email links by opening the account independently. Government branding can be copied in phishing messages, and urgent demands for gift cards, cryptocurrency or personal transfers are not normal IRCC fee collection.

Representative checks

If paying a representative, confirm whether the person is authorised under Canadian rules and use a written service agreement. Understand the tasks, fees, refund terms and communication. A representative can organise and advise; they cannot influence the decision through a private connection.

Review every answer before submission. “My agent filled it” does not remove the applicant’s responsibility for false information. Refuse any instruction to hide refusals, employment, family or intended activity.

Dual intent

Canadian law can recognise that a person may have a temporary purpose while also considering a lawful permanent pathway. This is often called dual intent. It does not remove the requirement to satisfy the officer that the applicant will respect the temporary stay if the longer-term plan does not proceed.

Do not misuse the concept as a slogan. Explain the immediate visit, legal status, finances and departure plan. If the circumstances involve an active sponsorship, work or study application, ensure the records are consistent and consider authorised advice when necessary.

Arrival preparation

Carry the host’s address and phone number, proof of onward or return arrangements, insurance, funds and evidence of the visit purpose. Know what goods must be declared. If carrying gifts, food, medication or substantial currency, read the Canada Border Services Agency requirements before packing.

Answer the officer’s questions directly. Do not present a memorised speech or hide documents in checked luggage. If a visitor record is issued, read its conditions and expiry. A future extension must be requested through the proper process before status expires; a visa sticker itself does not extend a stay inside Canada.

Application audit questions

  • Can an independent reader calculate the trip cost?
  • Can they identify where every major fund came from?
  • Do the dates match leave, event and accommodation?
  • Is the relationship to the host demonstrated?
  • Are the applicant’s ongoing responsibilities concrete?
  • Have refusals and immigration history been answered accurately?
  • Could every uploaded record be verified with its issuer?
  • Does the plan remain temporary even if another future goal exists?

Children and family groups

Each family member needs the correct application, passport and supporting records. Parents should check consent requirements when a minor travels with one parent or another adult, and provide relationship documents and custody information where relevant. Do not assume one parent’s biometrics or visa covers the children.

Create a family cover index showing shared itinerary, accommodation and payer, followed by each person’s identity and circumstances. This reduces duplication while preserving individual applications. If one person has a different travel history, refusal or status, answer it separately and accurately. A family application can be decided differently for different members.
