How Long Does a Flight Reservation for Visa Stay Valid? When to Get It

There is no single universal answer to how long a flight reservation for visa purposes stays valid. Some temporary airline reservations may be released quickly, some remain active longer, and an itinerary-only document does not have the same kind of live booking status as a held reservation.

That distinction is important because many websites advertise a fixed number—24 hours, 48 hours or 72 hours—as though every airline and every reservation behaves the same way. They do not. The real answer depends on what was actually created, the airline or supplier rules, fare conditions and the stage of your visa application.

First identify what you actually have

Before asking when a document “expires,” identify its status:

  • Itinerary only: shows a proposed route and dates but may not represent a held airline booking.
  • Held reservation: a genuine booking exists temporarily in a supplier or airline reservation system.
  • Ticketed booking: the fare has been issued as a ticket and follows the airline’s ticket and fare rules.

An itinerary can become outdated when the flight schedule changes, but it does not “expire” in exactly the same way as a live reservation hold. A genuine held reservation can be automatically released by the airline or supplier when its ticketing deadline is reached.

Why temporary reservations expire

Airlines do not normally hold unpaid seats indefinitely. A reservation can have a ticketing deadline, after which the booking may be cancelled if no ticket is issued. The deadline can vary by airline, route, fare, distribution system and supplier arrangement.

That means a private provider should not promise a fixed validity period unless that period genuinely applies to the specific reservation being supplied.

Is 48 hours the standard?

No universal government or airline rule makes every visa reservation valid for 48 hours. Some providers deliberately sell 48-hour products, while other bookings may last for a shorter or longer period. The provider’s product design is not the same thing as an industry-wide rule.

StepOut does not treat “48 hours” as a universal promise. A StepOut request may be an itinerary-preparation service, or a genuine supplier reservation may be created where the workflow supports it. Supplier status is shown only when it actually exists.

When should you get a flight reservation for a visa appointment?

The safest timing depends on the document requirement and how the application is submitted.

If you upload documents online

Check whether the visa authority wants a current itinerary at the time of upload or whether documents will also be reviewed later at an appointment. If a live reservation is specifically required, ordering too early can mean the hold is gone before the document is checked.

If you have an in-person appointment

Work backwards from the appointment date. Leave enough time to correct traveller names, route problems or date inconsistencies, but do not assume that a temporary booking created weeks earlier will still be active.

If the authority accepts an itinerary

You may not need a live hold at all. The purpose may simply be to show intended travel dates and routing. Follow the exact checklist instead of buying a more expensive or more fragile document than necessary.

What if the reservation expires before the visa decision?

That does not automatically mean the application becomes invalid. A temporary travel reservation is not the visa itself. What matters is what the receiving authority required at the point of submission and whether the evidence was genuine and consistent when presented.

However, if the authority asks for an updated reservation, additional evidence or a current travel plan, you should provide a current document rather than editing an old PDF to make it look active.

Do not alter an expired reservation

Changing dates, booking references or status text manually on an old document can turn a once-genuine record into misleading evidence. If your travel dates change or the booking is released, request a new or updated itinerary through a legitimate process.

StepOut has a dedicated guide for this scenario: Flight Reservation for Visa When Your Travel Dates May Change.

How to reduce timing risk

  1. Check the visa checklist first. Determine whether it asks for an itinerary, reservation, booking confirmation or paid ticket.
  2. Know your appointment or upload date. Do not order a time-sensitive product without knowing when it will actually be used.
  3. Check traveller names immediately. Fixing a spelling error is easier before submission.
  4. Keep accommodation dates aligned. Flight and hotel evidence should support the same trip.
  5. Ask what happens if the booking is released. A provider should be able to explain the document state honestly.
  6. Do not rely on an arbitrary internet validity claim. The actual supplier status matters more than a blog headline.

Visa timing and paid tickets are separate decisions

Do not confuse reservation validity with the question of when to buy the final airline ticket. Some authorities explicitly warn applicants not to buy a ticket before the visa is issued. The U.S. Department of State, for example, tells visitor-visa applicants not to make final travel plans or buy tickets until they have a visa.

See the official U.S. visitor visa guidance. Other countries use their own procedures, so this should not be treated as a universal rule.

Schengen travel arrangements

Current European External Action Service guidance tells Schengen applicants to provide genuine hotel and flight reservations that match their actual travel plans and advises using arrangements that can be cancelled or changed without extra cost where possible.

See the EEAS Schengen guidance.

What StepOut’s status means

A StepOut service reference tracks your request. It is not automatically an airline booking reference. If the order is itinerary preparation only, StepOut does not claim that an airline is holding a seat. If a genuine supplier reservation is created, its status can be shown separately.

This matters when discussing validity. An itinerary and a supplier hold should not be described using the same expiry language.

Common timing mistakes

Ordering weeks before the appointment

A time-limited hold may disappear long before you need it.

Ordering at the last minute

You may notice a wrong name, poor connection or inconsistent date too late to correct it.

Assuming an expired PNR means you can edit the PDF

You should not. If current evidence is required, obtain current evidence.

Choosing flights without checking transit rules

A short-lived reservation is still a poor choice if the connection creates a transit-visa problem. Use StepOut’s transit visa risk guide when relevant.

Plan around the authority, not the clock

The visa authority’s submission process should determine your timing. If documents are uploaded days before an appointment, account for that. If evidence is reviewed at the counter, work from that date. If the authority later requests updated travel evidence, provide a fresh document rather than assuming the first reservation must remain active indefinitely.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a flight reservation valid for visa purposes?

There is no universal duration. A genuine hold follows the actual airline or supplier deadline. An itinerary-only document is not the same thing as a live reservation hold.

Should I get the reservation the day before my appointment?

Not automatically. Allow enough time for review and correction while keeping any genuine hold current for when it is needed.

What happens if my dates change?

Update the itinerary through a legitimate process. Do not manually alter an old reservation document.

Does a live reservation need to stay active until the visa decision?

That depends on the receiving authority’s requirements. Follow the official checklist and any later request for updated evidence.

A practical timing example

Suppose your appointment is Friday morning. Ordering a temporary reservation two weeks earlier may be pointless if the underlying hold is released before Friday. Ordering at midnight on Thursday can be equally poor planning if the traveller name is misspelled or the route creates a transit problem. A sensible approach is to identify the exact document requirement first, then allow enough time to review and correct the itinerary while keeping any genuinely time-limited reservation relevant to the submission point.

The correct window is therefore operational, not universal. It depends on the provider’s processing time, the supplier’s reservation deadline and the visa authority’s submission process. A website promising “always valid for 48 hours” should be understood as describing its own product, not a worldwide airline rule.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • Is this product an itinerary or an actual held reservation?
  • If it is held, what determines the release deadline?
  • Can I request the document for a particular appointment date?
  • What happens if the airline changes the schedule?
  • What happens if I spot a name or route error?
  • Can the provider explain the current status without asking me to rely only on a PDF?

Keep proof of the state you submitted

Save the document and the provider’s confirmation from the time you submitted it. If the reservation later changes or expires, that record helps you understand what existed at the time. Do not assume that a temporary booking must remain live forever to prove that it once existed; instead, respond honestly if the authority later asks for current travel evidence.

Bottom line: do not choose a flight-reservation product based on a universal “48-hour” promise. Identify what the visa authority requires, understand whether your document is an itinerary or a genuine held reservation, and time it around the point when the evidence will actually be reviewed.
