What is the Egypt e-Visa?
The Egypt e-Visa is an official electronic travel authorization issued by the Egyptian Ministry of the Interior. It allows eligible travelers to enter Egypt for tourism or business for stays of up to 30 days. The application is completed entirely online, eliminating the need to visit an embassy in person.
1. Who Needs the Egypt e-Visa?
Citizens of approximately 70+ countries are eligible for the Egypt e-Visa. This includes travelers from:
- United States, Canada, United Kingdom
- All European Union member states
- Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea
- Many Latin American, Asian, and African nations
However, not everyone can use the e-Visa. Citizens of Nigeria, Ghana, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and several other countries are currently not eligible for the online e-Visa and must use the Visa on Arrival (VOA) or consular visa process.
2. Benefits of the Egypt e-Visa
- 100% online process — no embassy visits required
- Fast processing — typically 5 to 7 business days
- Multiple entry options — single-entry ($30) or multiple-entry ($65) available
- Valid for 3 months (single-entry) or 6 months (multiple-entry) from approval
- Stay up to 30 days per visit
- No airport queues — skip the visa-on-arrival lines
3. Requirements for the Egypt e-Visa
Before you start your application, make sure you have the following:
- Valid passport — must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Egypt
- Passport-style photo — digital format (JPEG, under 2MB), white background, full face visible
- Travel itinerary — flight reservation or confirmed booking
- Accommodation details — hotel booking or host address in Egypt
- Valid email address — to receive your approved e-Visa
- Credit or debit card — for payment (Visa, Mastercard, etc.)
Your passport must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp, though two pages are recommended.
4. How to Apply — Basic Steps
The application process is simple and can be completed in about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Visit the official portal — Go to visa2egypt.gov.eg, the official website of the Egyptian Ministry of the Interior.
- Create an account — Register with your email address and create a password.
- Fill out the application form — Enter your personal details, passport information, travel dates, and accommodation details.
- Upload your documents — Upload a digital copy of your passport and a recent passport photo.
- Pay the visa fee — Pay online using a credit or debit card. Fees are $30 for single-entry and $65 for multiple-entry.
- Submit and wait — Processing typically takes 5 to 7 business days. You will receive your approved e-Visa by email.
- Print and travel — Print a copy of your e-Visa to present upon arrival in Egypt.
5. Special Note for Nigerian Travelers
Nigerian passport holders are currently NOT eligible for the Egypt e-Visa. According to the official Egyptian eVisa platform, Nigeria is not among the countries that can apply online. Instead, Nigerian travelers must follow a different process.
Why Nigerians Need Egypt for Kazakhstan Visa Processing
For Nigerian citizens who need to obtain a Kazakhstan visa, the process often requires traveling to Egypt. The Embassy of Kazakhstan in Cairo processes visa applications for Nigerian nationals who do not have a Kazakh diplomatic mission in Nigeria. This means:
- You must travel to Egypt to submit your Kazakhstan visa application in person at the Kazakh Embassy in Cairo.
- You will need a valid Egypt visa (or visa on arrival) to enter Egypt for this purpose.
- The Egypt visa you obtain must allow you to stay long enough to complete the Kazakhstan visa process.
Egypt Visa Options for Nigerians
- Visa on Arrival (VOA) — Nigerians are eligible for a 30-day Visa on Arrival at Egyptian airports. The fee is $30 USD (cash only). You must have a valid passport (6+ months validity), a confirmed return ticket, and proof of accommodation.
- Okay to Board (OTB) Authorization — Before boarding a flight to Egypt, Nigerian travelers must obtain an Egypt Okay to Board (OTB) approval. This is a pre-travel authorization that confirms your visa and travel documents have been verified. Without it, airlines may refuse boarding. Processing typically takes 2 days.
- Consular Visa — You can also apply for a visa through the Egyptian Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate in Lagos. This is recommended if you need a visa for a longer stay or a specific purpose.
1. Apply for your Egypt visa (or OTB authorization) well in advance.
2. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from Egypt.
3. Carry all required documents for your Kazakhstan visa application to the Kazakh Embassy in Cairo.
4. Allow sufficient time for both the Egypt visa process and the Kazakhstan visa processing.
6. Do Citizens of Other Countries Need a Visa?
Yes. Most foreign nationals require some form of visa to enter Egypt. The type of visa depends on your nationality:
- Visa-free entry — Citizens of UAE, GCC countries, and several Arab nations can enter Egypt without a visa.
- e-Visa eligible — Citizens of the USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and about 70 other countries can apply for the e-Visa.
- Visa on Arrival — Many nationalities, including Nigerians, Ghanaians, and citizens of several Asian and African countries, can obtain a visa on arrival at Egyptian airports.
- Consular visa required — Citizens of countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Yemen must apply for a visa through an Egyptian embassy or consulate before travel.
