Hold & document workflow
After the safety checks pass, StepOut can attempt a temporary unpaid airline Hold and prepare the protected reservation document. A StepOut reference is never presented as an airline PNR.
A flight reservation for visa is commonly used to show an intended journey before a traveller commits to a non-refundable airline ticket. The exact evidence required depends on the embassy, consulate, visa centre and visa category handling the application. StepOut Travel helps travellers organise a clear flight itinerary around the route and dates they genuinely plan to use.

What a flight reservation for visa should show
A useful visa-travel itinerary should make the proposed journey easy to understand. It normally includes the traveller’s legal name, departure and destination airports, outbound and return dates where applicable, airline and flight details when available, and any connections that form part of the route. Those details should agree with the rest of the application rather than being created in isolation.
For example, if the application says the traveller will arrive in Budapest on 20 November and leave on 30 November, the flight itinerary, accommodation dates and stated purpose of travel should support the same timeline. A route that contradicts the hotel stay or places the traveller in two countries on the same night creates unnecessary questions.
Why travellers use an itinerary before buying a ticket
Visa decisions are not guaranteed, so paying for an inflexible ticket too early can expose the applicant to avoidable financial risk. Official guidance varies by destination. Some Schengen guidance accepts a preliminary ticket booking or travel itinerary at the application stage, while the U.S. Department of State tells visitor-visa applicants not to make final travel plans or buy tickets until a visa has been issued.
Always follow the current checklist issued by the authority handling your own application. StepOut provides travel-planning support; it does not decide what a consulate will accept and cannot guarantee a visa outcome.
How StepOut prepares the flight itinerary
- Enter the intended route. Choose the origin, destination, departure date, return date for a round trip, and number of travellers.
- Keep transit practical. Note countries you prefer to avoid when a transit visa or airport-transfer requirement could complicate the journey.
- Use current flight information. The final itinerary should be based on a real route and current schedule data rather than invented flight numbers.
- Review the traveller details. Names must match the passport or travel document the applicant intends to use.
- Receive the completed document securely. Paid StepOut requests move through review, document preparation and protected delivery.
Itinerary, held reservation and ticket are different
A flight itinerary describes the intended journey. A held reservation exists only when an airline or authorised supplier actually creates the booking and returns a genuine booking reference. A ticketed booking exists only after ticket issuance. StepOut keeps these states separate so the customer can tell exactly what has been created.
If the service provided for a particular order is itinerary preparation only, the document will not pretend that a seat is held. If StepOut later creates a genuine supplier reservation for that order, the real supplier status and booking reference can be shown separately.
Round trip, one way and multi-city planning
Round trips are common for short visits because the return date helps show the intended period abroad. One-way travel may be appropriate for some immigration, study or relocation situations, but the visa authority may expect additional evidence explaining onward plans. Multi-city routes require extra care because accommodation and intercity movements must form one coherent chronology.
Do not add unnecessary cities simply to make an application look more impressive. A realistic route with sensible connection times and clear dates is usually easier to explain than an overloaded itinerary.
Transit countries matter
A connecting flight can pass through a country where the traveller may need an airport-transit visa, permission to change terminals, or permission to clear immigration and re-check baggage. Transit rules depend on nationality, residence status, airport, connection type and destination. Check the official immigration or consular rules before relying on a connection.
Flight reservation for Schengen, UK, Canada, Australia and other visas
There is no single worldwide document rule. Different missions can ask for different evidence, and local visa centres sometimes publish additional checklists. Use the StepOut document only when it fits the instructions for your application. If the authority requests a genuine airline reservation with a verifiable booking reference, an itinerary-only document is not a substitute for that requirement.
Frequently asked questions
Is a flight itinerary the same as an airline ticket?
No. An itinerary can show the intended route and current flight details without proving that a ticket has been issued.
Is my StepOut reference an airline PNR?
No. The StepOut reference tracks your service request. A genuine airline booking reference is shown only if an airline or approved supplier actually creates one.
Can I choose my travel dates and preferred airline?
Yes. Use the dates you genuinely intend to travel and add an airline preference when it matters. The final route still needs to be operational and sensible.
Can I request a round trip for several travellers?
Yes. The reservation form supports multiple travellers. Each traveller’s legal name should be entered accurately.
How is the completed document delivered?
StepOut uses a protected document workflow. When a paid request is completed, the customer can receive a secure delivery email and use the Reservation Status page to access the document.
Check the authority handling your application
