Kazakhstan Travel Guide 2027: Almaty, Astana, Nature & Trip Planning
Kazakhstan rewards travellers who respect distance. Almaty’s mountain access, Astana’s modern capital landscape, Turkistan’s heritage and the country’s steppe, lakes, canyons and deserts are spread across a vast territory. A route that looks simple on a small map can require a flight, overnight train or full day on the road.
The best first plan is often one urban base plus a carefully chosen nature segment, or two regions connected by air. This creates time to experience place rather than collecting airports and vehicle hours.
Choose the region before the attractions
Almaty is a strong base for city culture, food and access to southeastern landscapes. Astana is the political capital with distinctive architecture and a very different climate and atmosphere. Turkistan and the south connect to Silk Road history, while western Kazakhstan offers Caspian and Mangystau landscapes that need dedicated logistics.
List the experiences you care about—mountain hiking, winter sport, city design, history, photography or desert terrain—and group them geographically. Do not treat Charyn Canyon, the Mangystau plateau and Astana as neighbouring day trips.
Almaty
Almaty combines tree-lined neighbourhoods, museums, markets, cafés and a mountain horizon. Plan time for the city itself instead of using it only as a pickup point. Weather and traffic affect access to nearby mountain areas, and altitude or trail conditions can change the difficulty.
Popular excursions may include Medeu and Shymbulak, Charyn Canyon, mountain lakes or national-park areas. Names often cover broad territories, so confirm the exact viewpoint, walking distance, road, permits and seasonal access included in a tour.
Astana
Astana’s broad avenues, riverfront and monumental architecture can be explored over two or three days. Distances and winter conditions make transport planning useful. Museums and indoor spaces provide alternatives during extreme weather.
The capital is well connected by domestic flights and rail. If combining it with Almaty, compare an overnight train with total airport time. The train reveals scale and saves a hotel night for some travellers; a flight saves hours but adds transfers and baggage rules.
Turkistan and the south
Turkistan is centred on major cultural and religious heritage, including the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Approach active religious places respectfully, follow photography and clothing guidance and allow more than a hurried stop.
Shymkent can support a southern route and access to nearby historical or natural sites. Summer heat can be intense, so seasonal timing and early starts matter.
Mangystau and western landscapes
The dramatic formations of Mangystau are remote. Trips can involve long off-road drives, basic camps and limited water or signal. This is not a casual self-drive add-on for someone unfamiliar with the terrain. Use a capable operator, understand the vehicle and emergency plan, and carry appropriate supplies.
Ask exactly where you will sleep, what food and water are included, how weather affects the route, whether toilets exist and what insurance covers. Photographs of the landscape do not communicate the logistical reality.
Season and climate
Kazakhstan has large seasonal and regional variation. Astana winters can be severely cold and windy; summers can be hot. Almaty has mountain conditions that differ from the city. Desert areas create another set of extremes.
Check historical norms when choosing a month and the short-range forecast before each excursion. Pack layers, sun protection and footwear for the actual terrain. A city forecast is not enough for a high mountain trail.
Entry rules
Visa-free arrangements exist for many nationalities for defined periods, while other travellers need a visa. Rules depend on passport, purpose and length. Check Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the responsible embassy; do not rely on a list copied years earlier.
Confirm passport validity, entry permissions and any registration or host-notification obligations. Accommodation providers may complete required notifications, but the traveller should understand the rule and retain evidence where appropriate. Work and long stays use different processes.
International arrival
Almaty and Astana are common international gateways. Some routes connect through regional hubs. Compare arrival time, onward domestic connection, baggage through-check and visa/transit requirements for the connecting country.
Allow a safe connection buffer, especially on separate tickets. Winter weather can affect operations. Keep the first-night address and transport plan available offline.
Domestic flights
Flying is practical for distant regions. Compare schedules, checked and cabin baggage, airport location and change terms. Smaller airports may have fewer daily alternatives, so a cancellation can affect the route more than on a high-frequency corridor.
Rail travel
Rail can be comfortable and revealing, but journeys are long. Check the official timetable, train type, carriage class, berth arrangement and identity requirements. Buy through official or trusted channels and verify the station because cities can have more than one.
Bring water and food appropriate to the journey while respecting carriage rules. Keep valuables secure and set an alarm before arrival. Basic Russian or Kazakh phrases and offline translation can help.
Road trips and tours
Road quality varies, and weather, livestock, distance and fuel availability matter. For remote self-driving, understand licence requirements, insurance, rental restrictions and emergency coverage. A standard rental agreement may prohibit off-road use.
For tours, verify vehicle, group size, driver hours, guide language, meals, tickets, accommodation and cancellation. Ask whether the advertised location is reached by road or requires a hike.
Money and payments
The local currency is the tenge. Cards are common in major cities, but cash remains useful in smaller settlements, markets and remote areas. Carry backup payment and avoid keeping all cards and cash together.
Use bank or established exchange channels and check ATM and conversion fees. If a terminal offers to charge in your home currency, understand the exchange rate before accepting. Keep small cash for local purchases without displaying a large amount.
Budget design
Separate urban daily costs from nature-tour costs. Remote transport, guide, four-wheel-drive vehicle and camp equipment can make a landscape segment the most expensive part of the trip. Add domestic transport, park fees, insurance and weather contingency.
Do not compare a group tour’s headline price with independent travel until you list everything included. A private driver may look expensive but replace multiple transfers for a group; a very cheap excursion may omit tickets, meals or safe equipment.
Accommodation
Major cities offer hotels, hostels and apartments. Check recent reviews, location, heating or cooling, lift access and registration support. For apartments, verify the host and building access before sending money.
Remote stays may be guesthouses, yurts or camps with limited facilities. Ask about bedding, temperature, electricity, showers and dietary needs. Arrive with realistic expectations and respect host communities.
Language and communication
Kazakh is the state language and Russian is widely used. English availability varies. Learn greetings, numbers and food or transport phrases, and download offline translation. Show an address in the local script when asking for directions.
A language gap is not permission to speak impatiently or assume agreement. Confirm price and plan in writing where important.
Food
Kazakh cuisine reflects pastoral traditions and regional influences, with meat, dough and dairy appearing often, alongside broader Central Asian and international options. Tell restaurants about allergies clearly and understand that vegetarian requests may require explanation.
Use safe water and ordinary food hygiene, especially during remote travel. Pack suitable snacks if dietary needs are strict.
Health, altitude and outdoor safety
Consult appropriate travel-health advice. For mountain activities, account for altitude, rapid weather change, trail condition and rescue access. Start conservatively and do not follow a social-media location without understanding the route.
Insurance should cover hiking altitude, skiing, horse riding or off-road travel if included. Carry essential medication and verify rules for controlled medicines before entry.
Connectivity
Local mobile service is strong in cities but can disappear in canyons, steppe and desert. Compare SIM and eSIM registration requirements, save maps offline and share remote plans with a trusted contact. A satellite communication plan may be appropriate for specialised expeditions.
Culture and respect
Ask before photographing people, religious activity or private homes. Dress and behave respectfully at mosques, mausoleums and memorials. Accept hospitality appreciatively while communicating dietary or health limits.
Do not climb fragile formations, drive off permitted tracks or leave waste at natural sites. Follow park and guide instructions; the landscape’s openness does not mean it has no rules or communities.
Example ten-day route
Days one to three: Almaty city and a weather-appropriate nearby mountain excursion. Days four and five: a southeastern nature trip, allowing real road time. Day six: return and rest. Day seven: fly or take an overnight connection to Astana. Days eight and nine: capital architecture, museums and neighbourhoods. Day ten: departure buffer.
For Turkistan or Mangystau, build a separate regional trip or add several days. Do not attach a remote expedition to a tight international departure.

Planning a winter visit
Winter is not simply the summer route with a heavier coat. Astana wind chill, short daylight, icy pavements and road closures can change daily movement. Almaty ski areas require suitable clothing, equipment and awareness of mountain conditions. Build indoor alternatives and avoid a tight rural road schedule.
Use proper insulated layers, footwear and skin protection. Confirm whether accommodation and vehicles are prepared for severe temperatures. A cheap transfer is not good value if the vehicle or driver is unsuitable for the conditions.
Planning a hiking visit
Select trails by distance, elevation, altitude, exposure, navigation and rescue access. A short mountain path can be demanding when it gains height quickly or weather turns. Ask local park or guide sources about current closures and permits.
Start early, carry water and layers, turn back when conditions deteriorate and avoid hiking alone beyond your capability. Share the exact route. Online photographs may have been taken in another season and do not prove current access.
Border regions and restricted areas
Some border or sensitive territories can require permission or have access controls. Check official information before a remote route and respect signs and officials. A map pin or tour advertisement is not proof that a foreign traveller may enter freely.
Carry the original passport when legally required, but keep copies secure. Do not photograph checkpoints, military facilities or critical infrastructure without permission.
Tour operator assessment
Ask for the legal operator name, guide or driver contact, vehicle, passenger capacity, route, inclusions, cancellation and emergency method. Look for recent, detailed reviews across more than one channel. For camping, request a packing list and sanitation information.
Clarify whether the price is per vehicle or person and whether park fees, meals and accommodation are included. Pay through a traceable method and retain the agreement. The lowest bid may conceal an overcrowded vehicle or unsafe driving schedule.
Respecting natural sites
Use existing roads and trails, pack out waste and avoid disturbing animals or geological formations. Do not drive onto fragile ground to reproduce a photograph. Water resources can be limited; follow local camp practice and do not contaminate them.
Support local guesthouses, guides and food providers when they fit the plan. Ask before photographing residents or cultural practices and obtain consent that is meaningful, not assumed.
Food and hospitality scenario
If invited to a home or shared table, follow the host’s cues, accept or decline politely and communicate allergies before eating. Hospitality can be generous, but a traveller is not required to consume something medically unsafe. Learn a simple phrase or carry a translated allergy card.
Alcohol, dress and religious practice vary among people and places. Avoid making assumptions from national labels. Observe, ask respectfully and allow hosts to define their own household.
Missed-connection planning
For a long-distance domestic flight or train before international departure, identify the next available service. If only one flight operates daily or weather risk is high, arrive in the gateway city the previous day. Keep essential medication and documents with you.
Separate tickets often provide less protection than a through itinerary. Travel insurance may help under defined conditions, but exclusions and required buffers matter. Read the policy before designing the connection.
Documentation at hotels and rentals
Hotels may request the passport for check-in and notification procedures. Confirm when it will be returned and keep a copy. For an apartment, verify who is responsible for any foreign-guest notification and obtain an address that can be shown to a driver or authority.
Do not leave the passport as informal security for equipment or a tour. Use a documented deposit method and understand the provider’s policy. If the passport is lost, contact local police, the relevant embassy or consulate and transport providers promptly; a digital copy helps identification but does not replace the document.
