Kazakhstan Visa Types for African Countries
There is no single “African passport” rule for Kazakhstan. Entry depends on the passport you hold, the purpose of the trip and, where a visa is required, the category that matches that purpose. Two travellers flying from the same African airport can have completely different entry requirements.
If you are planning a Kazakhstan trip, start with the current Kazakhstan Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa-regime table. It is more reliable than a copied country list because it distinguishes diplomatic, service and ordinary passports and can be updated when agreements change.
Examples from the current official ordinary-passport table
The examples below are useful for understanding how different the rules can be. They are not a substitute for checking your own passport before booking.

The official table also lists many African countries as visa-required. That is why StepOut no longer publishes a blanket statement that “most African countries” can use one electronic route.
Choose the route by travel purpose, not by the word “visa”
Kazakhstan uses different categories for different activities. A tourist route is not a substitute for employment or entrepreneurial activity, and a business-meeting visa is not the same as an investor or business-immigrant route.
- B12 — tourism: for tourism. Current government guidance states that a single-entry B12 can be valid for up to 90 days while permitting no more than 30 days of stay. Multiple-entry B12 can also be valid for up to 90 days with no more than 30 days at each entry, where the route is available.
- B1/B2/B3 — business-visit categories: used for specified business purposes such as conferences, meetings, consulting, negotiations or contract activity. The correct category depends on what you will actually do.
- C3 — employment: used for employment situations covered by Kazakhstan’s work-visa rules.
- C5 — business immigrant: for an adult entering for entrepreneurial activity. This is different from a short business visit.
- A5/A6 — investor categories: Kazakhstan’s current investor framework includes A5 and A6 rather than a generic “one-year investor visa.” Government guidance describes A5 multiple-entry validity up to five years for eligible recipients and A6 up to ten years for qualifying foreign businessmen who meet the investment threshold.
If your purpose is study, family/private visit, medical treatment, work or another long-stay activity, identify that category separately rather than starting with a tourist checklist.
B12 validity is not a 90-day tourist stay
This distinction caused confusion in the older version of this article. A visa can be valid over a wider date range while allowing a shorter period inside Kazakhstan. Current government B12 guidance says the permitted tourist stay is no more than 30 days, even where the visa itself is valid for up to 90 days.
If you need to remain in Kazakhstan beyond the period allowed by your current entry basis, do not assume that a B12 tourist visa automatically creates a continuous stay beyond 30 days. Check the purpose-specific immigration route that fits your circumstances.
How Kazakhstan e-Visa works
Kazakhstan’s electronic visa should not be described as a universal online visa for African travellers. Current government guidance says an electronic visa is issued on the basis of an electronically issued invitation. It is valid only for the visa holder and does not cover accompanying travellers automatically.
The government also states that holders of a valid electronic visa may enter and leave through international-airport border crossing points. The current Visa and Migration Portal and the QazETA platform are the appropriate starting points for the electronic process.
Whether an electronic route is available for your passport and intended visa category should be checked at the time of application. Do not treat an old list of “e-Visa countries” as permanent.
What QazETA ETA means for visa-exempt travellers
Kazakhstan is operating the QazETA platform with Electronic Travel Authorization for travellers from visa-exempt countries. Current government pilot guidance says an ETA application should be submitted no later than 72 hours before travel and that the authorization is valid for 180 days.
During the pilot period, the government describes ETA as recommended rather than generally mandatory for visa-exempt citizens, with specified exceptions and categories. An ETA does not extend the lawful stay and does not guarantee admission at the border. The border authority makes the final entry decision.
If you are visa-required, an ETA is not a substitute for the visa you need.
A practical application sequence for visa-required African passports
- Confirm the passport rule. Check your ordinary-passport status in Kazakhstan’s current visa-regime table.
- Define the real purpose. Tourism, conference attendance, negotiations, employment, entrepreneurship, investment and study can lead to different categories.
- Check the responsible route. Use the Kazakhstan government portal and the embassy/consulate responsible for your place of application.
- Confirm invitation requirements. Electronic visas and several visa categories can depend on an invitation or visa-support number. Do not buy an “invitation” before confirming that it is relevant to your route.
- Use the mission-specific checklist. Passport-validity margins, fees, submission methods and supporting documents can vary by mission and category.
- Keep the application consistent. Your stated purpose, invitation, accommodation, itinerary, employment/business evidence and financial documents should tell the same truthful story.
- Recheck shortly before travel. Visa approval does not remove airline and border checks.
Passport validity and document checklists
Do not use one StepOut sentence as a universal passport-validity rule for every Kazakhstan visa. Kazakhstan missions publish category-specific instructions. For example, several official mission pages require the passport to remain valid at least three months longer than the requested visa validity and specify blank-page requirements.
Likewise, the number of photographs, consular fee, invitation requirement and supporting evidence can differ by category and mission. The correct checklist is the one published for the route and mission handling your case.
Investor and entrepreneurial travel need extra care
Investment, company formation and immigration are related but separate questions. A traveller attending meetings may be on a business-visit route; a person entering to conduct entrepreneurial activity may need C5; an eligible investor may fall within A5 or A6. Do not choose a category because its name sounds commercially attractive.
If you will establish or join a Kazakhstan company, employ staff, work in the business or invest substantial funds, verify the immigration, company-registration, tax and labour implications with the appropriate Kazakhstan authorities and qualified professional advisers.
